DescrizioneThis volume is an updated and expanded version of the author's original book, first published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers and based on his cum laude doctoral dissertation. That volume discussed how the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence drowned in the first war between a communist and a non-aligned state. This new edition reproduces the original text, but supplements it considerably in light of subsequent developments and official records and reports only later released or leaked to the public. It places Sino-Indian relations in the wider, current context of the rise of China, the position of Tibet and the disorganised state of Asia. The border dispute did not prevent substantial economic relations developing between the two countries and visits taking place at the highest political level. But it still gives rise to almost daily incursions, and in the current climate, the risk of a clash is growing, as forces have been strengthened and most of the Line of Actual Control has not been demarcated. This thought-provoking volume sheds light on what is still a complex and uneasy relationship.

DescrizioneThe universal feeling that discrimination and intolerance based on race. religion or beliefs have to be confronted by the international community led to the adoption, half a century ago, of the international convention to which this book is devoted, one of the most ratified treaties. The book comments on the contents of the Convention and its impact on anti-racist and anti-bias legislation and jurisprudence, as well as its influence on, and applicability to other international texts. In an Introduction to this expanded and edited reprint, the author updates the status of the Convention, summarizes the work of CERD, the implementation body of the Convention, and discusses its relevance to general human rights, particularly the area of religious intolerance, and some difficult issues such as the possible clash with other fundamental freedoms.

DescrizioneAt the time of its original publication in 1982, this ground-breaking volume sought to identify fundamental norms and standards which could help to guarantee the quality and integrity of fact-finding reports. A lot has happened in human rights fact-finding since then. There are numerous human rights fact-finding rapporteurs within the United Nations system and within regional organizations; there are many international commissions of inquiry; international criminal tribunals have helped clarify various areas of the law; NGOs are extremely active in the field. Despite, or perhaps because of these developments, controversies over fact-finding reports are very common. A source of reference to help fact-finders strengthen their work is sorely needed, and this volume remains of inestimable value in that regard. The guidance it provides has stood the test of time and is as valuable today as it was when it was first advanced, arguably it is more valuable today when the need for objective standards of human rights fact-finding has become of urgent importance in a world in which the political ground is shifting visibly. The current volume is a re-issued version of the original text, with new introductory materials.
